GODâS WORD TRANSFORMS US
That assertion flows from Psalm 19:7a (NKJV), which says, âThe law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul.â Letâs walk through it a word at a time. The word law means the Torah, âthe law for life, rule for living.â When Godâs Word is spoken of as law, it means the norm or the standard by which every action is measured. I love that phrase, âthe law of the Lord.â Whose law is it? The Bible is the law âof the Lord.â Now for centuries men have laid down their lawsâsome wise, some foolish, always inevitably contradictory, seldom justly administered, always changing. These are the laws of men. But thatâs the great thing about Godâs law; itâs not the law of men, but the law of the Lord. How is it described? The law of the Lord âis perfect.â Thatâs what God says about His own Word. The word perfect means literally âall-sidedâ or âmany faceted.â It means âall encompassÂingâ or âthorough in every respect.â In fact this âlaw of the Lordâ is so comprehensive that we are told that it is effective in âconverting the soul.â
You have a soul and so do I. The soul is the part of a human being that thinks and feels and chooses and relates to God. Animals do not have souls. When aniÂmals die, they go down into the earth. But when people die, their souls go upward and give account to God (Ecclesiastes 3:21 NKJV). We all have souls. Itâs the immaÂterial part of every human beingâthe part of us that will live forever. God created us with souls so we could relate to others and to Him, but instead we have all chosen to sin, to go our own way. For that reason our souls are damaged and deserving of Godâs judgment.
Now what the Scripture is telling us is that Godâs Word is the answer to our soul problem. To paraphrase what is written: âGodâs law is so totally comprehensive that it is able to convert a soul.â The word convert there is a fantastic word. Some translations use the English word revive or restore, but the more common meaning is âtransform.â How phenomenal to comprehend what God is telling us about His Word. God promises that His law is so totally comprehensive that whatever the condition of the individual soul, His Word can transform it from top to bottom, from inside to outside, from past to future. Scripture changes you to the very core of who you are as a person.
Over a hundred years ago one of the greatest preachers who ever walked the face of this earth said these words: âThe great means of the conversion of sinners is the Word of God, and the more closely we keep to it in our ministry, the more likely we are to be successful. It is Godâs Word rather than manâs comment on Godâs Word which is made mighty with souls.â3 I could tell dramatic stories of
